This will be a special year for the hundreds of enthusiasts who converge annually on W1AW, a small station in Newington, Conn., known as “the mecca of ham radio,” to broadcast around the globe.

An excellent, accurate, and sometimes entertaining history of organized amateur radio in the United States.  The article puts particular emphasis on emergency and public service aspects of ham radio, although other aspects of amateur radio do get mentioned.  This article is timely, considering the onset of the 2014 hurricane season.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
