Radio Shack suffers $400 million in net loses for 2013.

According to “CQ” Magazine, Radio Shack will close up to 1,100 underperforming stores this year.  The struggling electronics chain reported a net loss of $400 million in 2013, “with nearly half of that coming in the fourth quarter alone.” Amateur Radio operators have relied on the “Shack” for ham items, shortwave radios, and scanners.  Radio Shack has placed a greater emphasis on mobile phones and accessories, “a market that has softened recently , as new purchases have given way to replacements and upgrades.”  The one bright spot in this picture for hams is a new focus on kits and building, a partial response to the popularity of the “maker movement.”  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
