A decent article on what one California city is doing to provide back up emergency communications for its residents.  According to reporter Craig Schultz, the Beaumont Civic Center has gone "old school" by installing a "ham radio station" on its premises.  The amateur radio station will serve as a backup communications system if a major disaster takes out power and telephone service.  The city used $5,500 in grant money, with $3,000 going for new equipment.  Schultz says, "Part of what ham radio operators offer is being the eyes and ears of the community."  Well put.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
