A nice review of the "goTenna" device from "Radio World" reporter Doug Lung.  According to Lung, the goTenna is s6" long and1" wide and is designed for long range messaging with out using a cellular link or Wi-Fi.  Interface is through an app for a smart phone or tablet using a Bluetooth device.  Power is restricted to 2 watts, with an antenna height limit of 60′.  The goTenna sends and receives in the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) band, 151-154 MHz.  The cost is $149 for a pair of goTenna devices.  GoTenna is awaiting FCC approval.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
