Nice article about amateur radio involvement in the "International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend" which took place this Saturday and Sunday (15-16 August 2014).  The Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club was one of the many ham radio groups participating in this annual event that promotes amateur radio and the preservation of historic lighthouses and lightships around the world.  Members of this Long Island, New York,  amateur radio club set up a portable station at Robert Moses State Park, "teaching visitors the history behind lighthouse communication" and the need to preserve this part of maritime history.  Club president John Melfo noted that "in this day and age of cellphones, laptops and the internet, people don’t realize there was a whole world that existed before 21st century technology."  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
