Thanks to reporter David Hall for referring me to this excellent article by Bertrand Berges.  Berges describes the physics of lightning strikes and the type of equipment that will protect your data and processing equipment.  Bertrand makes an excellent case for protecting your sensitive electronic equipment with with specific kinds of surge protection–type 1 which occurs during a massive surge from a lightning strike and type 2, which happens during repetitive small surges that can damage equipment over the short term.  Excellent article worth keeping in your amateur radio library.  Aloha de Russ (KH6JRM).
