High altitude balloons equipped with low power amateur radio transceivers have proven quite popular with high school and university students.  In fact, some of these radio-equipped balloons have completed several circumnavigations of the Northern Hemisphere.  The experience gained from high altitude balloons can help students design CubeSats, and possibly, other spacecraft for future launch programs.
